Chapter Five

“The problem is, the gas station is very far away,” I said to Blueberry as we made our way out of the costume storage room. “I’ve traveled there before with Penelope on her bike. She’s always huffing and puffing and thirsty for a drink by the time we get there, so I know it takes a lot of effort. We both have short legs, so it would take us forever to run there. If we were just a bit bigger we could probably get there in no time, but we’re both so small.”

We trotted down the hallway. Blueberry Muffin was dragging the dirty old hat with her.

“Who are you calling small?” Bueberry asked, puffing out her fur. Her tone wall filled with the same kind of attitude that Penelope sometimes gives me if I bug her too much about studying vocabulary words of the week.

So I did what I always do with Penelope—I dropped the topic promptly and switched gears.

“I think I know how we can get there,” I said. “It will also save us from having to go down that ladder again.”

“Great!” Blueberry said. “Because I don’t know if I can go down that ladder. Getting up it was hard enough. What’s your idea?”

“We have to use magic,” I said. “Have you been studying along with Cora?”

“I don’t have to study,” Blueberry said, lifting her chin. “I was born magical. It’s in my heart. I just remind myself often to let my heart lead the way, and magical things happen naturally. ”

“Well, does your heart know how to fly a broom?” I asked. “Because that’s what we have to do.” I pulled ahead of Blueberry and led the way into the room with the broken window. As I surveyed the dusty ropes, pulley systems, and other shelves of props I said, “Only it’s not going to be a broom exactly...”

“My heart definitely doesn't know how to fly a broom,” Blueberry said. “Cora says I just have to let my light shine, and that’s how I work magic. She said it’s the same for her, and she said magic isn’t necessarily about making forms change, like going ‘poof’ and turning someone into a frog. She said sometimes you can change the way a person feels, and that’s magic, too. You can make people happy and give them love.”

“Yes,” I said, “and you can fly through the air. Ah ha! There it is—Tinkerbell’s wand. I knew I saw it in here somewhere when we walked through earlier!”

I strutted over to a shelf and pulled the wand down with my mouth. It clattered to the floor. It was composed of a two-foot long dowel, and a cardboard star which was spray painted gold.

I used my paw to swivel it around so that the end of the dowel with the star attached was in the back, and the other end—the ‘front’ of our makeshift broomstick—was pointed toward the window. “Now, it’s going to be a bit tight, but I think we can manage.
